The school opened after refurbishments. The blind and visually impaired students were transferred from Santa Marija School, Msida to Qrendi Centre for the Visually Impaired. In November 1992, the unit for deaf-blind students was transferred from
Pieta Unit for the Hearing Impaired to Qrendi. |
1997 |
The deaf students and the Peripatetic Service for the Deaf was transferred from Pieta to Qrendi Special School. |
2002 |
The school celebrated 10 years since its opening. The name ‘Helen Keller Special School’ was also chosen. The school population consisted of Sensory Impaired Students, that is deaf, blind and deaf-blind
students. |
2008 |
The Peripatetic Service for the Hearing Impaired was moved to Student Services at Ħamrun. Most of the students had left school by now
because they had reached school leaving age. |
2009 |
Discussions about the reform of Special Schools were initiated. In July 2009 the document about the reform was launched for discussion. |
2009/10 |
The school, now Helen Keller Resource Centre for Secondary/Young Adults, was to cater for PMLD students aged 13 to 22 years. All the students over the age of 13 years were to be transferred from San Miguel Resource Centre
since this centre was to take primary age students only. Eighteen new students were to be transferred from San Miguel to Helen Keller Resource Centre. Therefore classrooms had to be prepared for these students.
Transition for these students duly commenced. |
2010/11 |
Helen Keller School started as a Resource Centre. Population was 36 in all. Students were put in seven groups. Each group/class was to have a teacher and three LSA’s even though by the end of the year there were still some staff missing. The Resource Centre also became
part of St. Benedict’s College. |
2012 |
The Centre celebrated the 20th Anniversary. Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex visited the centre. |
2014 |
The Centre was awarded 1st place in the Plastic Cap Collection Campaign. |
2015 |
Students took part in the Young Peoples Environmental Summit. Using digital media, students put forward the issue of non-accessible bring in sites.
Our school was awarded the Green Flag for the first time. |
2016 |
The introduction of the Edible Garden in our Centre. Our centre took part in the Kreattiv Project – Sensory Wall |
2017 |
Our school was awarded the Green Flag for the second time. Celebrated the three sacraments at our centre, Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
Helen Keller Resource Centre celebrated the 25th Anniversary. |
